Comments/Quotes from high school journalists about the White Paper:

While attending workshops at Ball State University in July, high school journalists were polled about the recent findings on suburban schools. Here are some of their comments about the First Amendment.

?A lot of our (publication) students really care about the First Amendment. They go out there and do their interviews and do the best they can. I don't think kids our age really think about the First Amendment. They have their own lives and are really wrapped up in that.?

?I hope that the whole issue of the First Amendment is brought to high school students so they know what they are missing out on, and that this won't become a problem for our generation when we grow up and we're running the country.?

Amanda Jezior
Lake Central High School
St. John, Ind.

?I've never really felt First Amendment freedoms were on the verge of being taken away from me so I don't really think about it. If you are at city school with more people you have less of a chance of being heard so it's more thought about and focused on. In the suburbs, it's not as focused on because you usually can be heard. I've never really had a problem with it, so at this point, I don't really feel like anything should be done.?

Nancy Eichholtz
Lawrence Central High School
Indianapolis, Ind.
